On Thursday, May 19, 2005 the winner of the Tsunami Memorial Design Competition was announced at The Ladybug Club, 618 N. Water Street in Milwaukee.
The new tsunami memorial will be constructed on the grounds of Asian Moon Festival, June 17-19. The winning design was created by Hao Duong, Peter Jordan and Maura Rogers of the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Together, the group created a lasting memory to the victims of the Tsunami, and a fundraising vehicle for future long-term funding assistance to survivors of natural disasters in Asia.
The designers will be presented a cash prize and watch the construction of their vision on the Asian Moon Festival grounds beginning the first week of June, to be completed prior to the opening of the Festival on June 17th.
Construction of the memorial is being donated by the Associated General Contractors of Greater Milwaukee. The contest was sponsored by Legacy Bank, American Institute of Architects - Southeast Chapter, Premier Investment Consulting, Associated General Contractors - Greater Milwaukee, Red Brown Kle, Asian Moon Festival and the Asian American Relief Organization of Wisconsin.

TSUNAMI MEMORIAL DESIGN COMPETITION CONTEST RULES AND ENTRY FORM
In December of 2004 an earthquake off the coast of Indonesia resulted in
one of the most devastating natural disasters in recorded history. A
massive Tsunami, resulting from the quake, wrought indiscriminate
destruction upon 12 Asian nations. Annihilating impoverished villages,
wealthy tourist complexes and entire fishing fleets this wave would claim
over 300,000 human lives before its waters subsided. In the face of this
unprecedented catastrophe, humanity has been given an unprecedented
opportunity to demonstrate fellowship and care around the world.
As a tribute to the survivors of this event, and a solemn reminder of
those claimed by it, the Asian American Relief Organization of Wisconsin
(AAROW) has spearheaded the construction of a Tsunami Memorial for display
throughout Milwaukee's Asian Moon Festival, June 17-19.

The memorial site is a prominent location on the Milwaukee World Festival
grounds just east of the Mid-Gate, beyond the fountain, on the expansive
grassy field. The Memorial will be incorporated into overall fundraising
efforts and will help to remind us of the tragedy faced this past
December.
